International student brings designs to life in global animation festival

A University of Wolverhampton graduate is bringing his designs to life after his work, Jagged James, was selected for screening at the prestigious Annecy International Animation Festival in France. 

Christian Stewart, 23 from Donnycarney, Dublin, graduated in 2020 and studied for a degree in Animation at the University’s international partner organisation, Colaiste Dhulaigh College of Further Education in Dublin. 

The Transnational Education partnership at the University offers a variety of Wolverhampton School of Art and School of Performing Arts degree courses which are delivered at the College in Ireland as a University of Wolverhampton franchised award. 

The Annecy International Animation Festival is the biggest event in the annual animation calendar, attracting talent from across the globe.  The event will take place from 14 until 19 June and more than 2,700 films were submitted from almost 100 countries.  

Kevin White, Assistant Principal, Colaiste Dhulaigh College of Further Education in Dublin, said: "The relationship with the University of Wolverhampton has been ongoing since 1994. Well over 700 students have benefited over the years and this has made a positive impact on all of their lives. 

“We are extremely proud of Christian and his major achievement in getting his animation ‘Jagged James’ shortlisted at the Annecy International Film Festival.” 

Dr Debbie Gilliland, Head of Transnational Education in the Global Opportunities Office at the University, said: “Our longstanding partnership with Colaiste Dhulaigh College began with students travelling to the University of Wolverhampton and it continues to develop, despite the challenges brought about by the pandemic. 

“We are delighted to be able to celebrate the international recognition, and success, achieved by one of our global graduates.”
