The AHRC-funded Novel Perceptions research team at the University of Wolverhampton is touring the UK to discover the attitudes towards contemporary novels.

A brand-new ‘Big Book Review’ survey has been launched with BAFTA award-wining digital marketing company Joi Polloi to gain an insight in attitudes towards English fiction and discover what books readers truly enjoy.

From Belfast to Exeter, to Glasgow and Swansea, the Novel Perceptions team are aiming to engage members of the public to learn more about their opinions about the quality of popular contemporary novels. The public is also encouraged to share their guilty pleasure reads and book-related secrets in the ‘Literary Confessions Box.’

After a highly successful event at the Birmingham Literary Festival with writer Kit de Waal last weekend, the next stop on the Big Book Review roadshow is Belfast on October 22 and 23.  The team will present their research at the Crescent Arts Centre and Belfast Central Library.

Novel Perceptions’ Principal Investigator, Professor Sebastian Groes, said: “We know a lot about what professional critics and academics think about fiction, but the team wants to know what readers think about the quality of books – all different kinds of readers.

“We want to hear from people who read physical books, those who use e-readers, and those who listen to audio books. We’re inviting people who read at home, or during their commute, or those that use books to relax on holiday to discover what really matters to readers.”

Novel Perceptions will also be headlining at the Being Human festival next month with two events. On November 11, the team will talk to prison librarians about the taste of readers in the prison community and will travel to Exeter on November 14 to find out how readers think about cultural value in the south-west of the UK.
