Church leader honoured with degree award

A prominent member of the church has been awarded an Honorary Degree by the University of Wolverhampton. 

The Right Reverend Dr Rose Hudson-Wilkin, CD, MBE, has been recognised for her dedication and commitment to her long-standing career of 30 years following her ordination as Deacon in 1991. 

Rose was raised in Jamaica and is the Bishop of Dover and the Bishop in Canterbury.  

She was trained for ordination at Queens Theological College on their part-time course, ordained deacon in 1991, priested in 1994, and served her title at St Matthewʼs Church, Willenhall Road in the Diocese of Lichfield. 

 In 2007 she was appointed as a Chaplain to Her Majesty the Queen and in 2010 she became the first woman appointed as Chaplain to the Speaker of the House of Commons.  

She was also a member of the General Synod of the Church of England and also as one of the Panel of Chairs of the Synod. 

The University of Wolverhampton presented the Doctor of Letters award to the Right Reverend Dr Rose Hudson-Wilkin at a graduation ceremony on Monday 13 September 2021.  

Rose said: “I am deeply moved to be given such an honour from the University of Wolverhampton. I have wonderful memories of beginning my ordained ministry in Wolverhampton and am still in touch with many of the communities that I served. 

“Wolverhampton and its people will always be a part of my life story. This award has added to that story. Thank you, University of Wolverhampton.” 

The University of Wolverhampton graduation ceremonies are taking place at the Grand Theatre in Wolverhampton from Thursday 9 September – Friday 17 September 2021.   

The 17 ceremonies will see over 3,000 students who completed their studies in 2020 collect their awards.   

It is the first time the University has held a graduation ceremony since December 2019 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
