Academic reports research for Deaf women in BBC show

A University of Wolverhampton academic has been interviewed on the BBC’s See Hear programme about her research study focusing on the menopause as experienced by Deaf and hard of hearing women.

In partnership with BID Services, Sarah Bown, Senior Lecturer in Interpreting and Deaf Studies, undertook the research project between 2018 and 2019, and as part of the project, workshops relating to this topic were held in Birmingham and Solihull. The research found that there was a greater need for accessible information and support made available to Deaf women going through menopause.

The programme was aired on Wednesday 3 August but will be available on iPlayer following the broadcast.

Sarah said: “Despite existing legislation, (Equality Act 2010, Public Sector Equality Duty 2011, NHS Accessible Information Standard 2015), the health inequalities experienced by Deaf people are well documented.  Amongst wider society, there is growing awareness and discussion about the menopause, its impact upon women, access to specialist health care services/support and the understanding required during this transitional phase of a woman’s life.

“These successful pilot studies show that Deaf and hard of hearing women face greater barriers than most in fully accessing fundamental aspects of care, being able to understand the process of that care/treatment options and the knowledge to be able to make informed choices.”

Sign Health, the national charity for deaf people's health and wellbeing, have posted the Infographics findings of the menopause survey on their website.

Although very little NHS information about menopause is currently available in BSL, there are some useful alternative resources for Deaf and hard of hearing women. The Newson Health Menopause & Wellbeing Centre provides a collection of 18 short videos with BSL interpretation on a range of menopause related topics.
