CLASS OF 2021: Graduation art prize awarded by prestigious local artist society

A Class of 2021 graduate from the University of Wolverhampton School of Art has been awarded a £50 graduation prize by the Wolverhampton Society of Artists.

The Wolverhampton Society of Artists (WSA) is an established group of professional and amateur artists who work in a wide range of styles and media with artists that are proactive locally, nationally and internationally.

The Textile, Surface Pattern and Design degree student, Morgan Pickford, 23 from Stafford, received a cheque for £50 along with a book on fashion which was donated by a former President of WSA.

Keith Oram, current President of WSA, presented Morgan with her prize at the School of Art graduation ceremony at The Grand Theatre.

He said: “It’s our aim to ensure that we attract new and exciting artists to the group – they are the future of our artistic community in Wolverhampton which is why we offer these prizes.

“As well as the £50 award, we have also presented Morgan with an amazing book on fashion which was donated to us by Margaret Jarvis, a former President of WSA, who has an amazing collection of books.”

Morgan said: “For my degree I studied a variety of different things to do with textiles, mainly print design. I really enjoyed the course and I worked with people very closely.

“I didn’t really know what I wanted to do as a career and it was a last-minute thing to come to University but I wanted to do something I really loved. I’ve recently secured a job in Graphic Design and I’m really enjoying it.

“It was a great surprise to receive this award and I’d like to thank WSA for their support.”

Maggie Ayliffe, Head of the Wolverhampton School of Art, said: “We work with lots of art-based groups and companies that support our students and graduates through the prize awards schemes during graduation.

“It’s wonderful for students to be recognised for their efforts, achievements and talents while they are studying with us and we are especially pleased that this long-standing relationship with WSA continues to flourish.”
