The University of Wolverhampton celebrated ten years of its annual festival, SciFest showcasing the wonderful world of science to hundreds of visitors.

Last weekend, SciFest returned to the University’s City Campus offering a family fun day packed with free workshops, hands-on experiments, games and drop-in activities – all designed to bring STEM subjects to life.

Sponsored by Aspire to HE, SciFest 2022 attracted over 600 visitors and 550 students from local schools over the two-day festival.

From virtual reality to the planetarium explorer dome, visitors of all ages discovered the fantastic opportunities Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths have to offer.

Foxdog Studios’ Robot Chef hosted an interactive session with visitors controlling a robot chef to cook breakfast from their mobile phones and the University of Wolverhampton Racing Team (UWR) engaged future engineers in motorsports engineering.

martin_scifestDr Martin Khechara, Fellow for Public Engagement at the University, said: “It’s absolutely brilliant to be back. SciFest 2022 has been such a success - seeing lots of families of all ages together, happy, excited, and engaging via STEM.

“Events like SciFest are so important to our community, highlighting accessible careers in the STEM subject areas to the people of our community is paramount and events like these enable us to showcase the opportunities on offer in an innovative and interactive way.

“This is our first event since the pandemic, and it’s been awesome to be back in the courtyard – seeing families happy and having fun in the sunshine at our City Campus. We look forward to planning a bigger and better event for SciFest 2023.”

Safron Moreton from Uttoxeter, who attended the family day with her seven-year-old son said: “Coming here today has actually got me thinking about different career routes – I had no idea all the different kinds of jobs you could go into after studying Biology and Chemistry, so it’s certainly got me thinking about returning to education.

“Everyone I have spoken to has been very informative and engaging, it’s been fantastic for both of us, and we’ve really enjoyed it – we will definitely be back next year.”

Michelle Oakley from Wolverhampton, who also attended with her son said: “This is our second time at SciFest, we came to the last event before lockdown, had an amazing time and have been looking forward to today ever since.

“My son is really interested in science and loves anything that’s hands-on so events like this are just perfect. It’s been really educational, but in a fun way that gets both adults and children excited about science.”
