A research team at the University of Wolverhampton is set to tour its next roadshow to unlock insights into reading habits.

The Big Book Review is an Arts and Humanities Research Council-funded research project investigating the complex preconceptions that shape people’s reading choices.

After receiving over 21,000 survey responses in their first roadshow, the University’s Novel Perceptions team continues to engage members of the public to learn more about their opinions about the quality of popular contemporary novels.

The next stop on the Big Book Review roadshow is Glasgow’s Aye Write Festival where the team have a stand between 6 and 8 May and lead an event with writers Abir Mukherjee and Kaite Welsh, then onto Belfast to host a conference on Crime Fiction with Queen’s University Belfast, before presenting research at the Hay Festival in Wales between May 26 and June 5.

The Hay Festival is the world’s leading art and literature festival, bringing over 100,000 readers and writers together to share stories and ideas in events live and online.

During the festival, the team will reveal findings of reading habits indicated by their work with the ‘BBC's Novels That Shaped Our World' and invite guests to take part in their research to share what really makes a good book.

Novel Perceptions’ Principal Investigator, Professor Sebastian Groes, said: “We’ve had a fantastic response so far – receiving over twenty-five thousand responses makes this the largest survey for contemporary fiction ever.

“We’re really excited about the next round of our roadshow and looking forward to meeting readers across Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.

“Landing a spot at the Hay Festival is also an incredible opportunity for us to engage with thousands of readers and writers which will have a significant impact on our research.”
