CLASS OF 2022: Adam gets down to business with a Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship

Adam Nicholls, 34 from West Bromwich, is getting down to business after graduating with a First Class Honours Degree Apprenticeship in Chartered Management, with his studies being funded through the Apprenticeship Levy and his employer, Progress Care Solutions.

Adam had studied A Levels when he left school and started to study for a Sports Coaching degree, but it didn’t feel like the right time for him to study at that level so he started a career working with children with autism and disabilities at Progress Care Solutions, an independent provider of specialist social care services to vulnerable children and young adults.

He moved up in the business to a management role and an opportunity became available to study for a Degree Apprenticeship.

He said: “It’s an amazing feeling to be graduating and it doesn’t seem real.  I wonder, looking back, how I found the time.  It also feels like it’s been a long time coming.

“My employer has supported me right the way through my Apprenticeship, and even though it was intense, having a young family, studying part-time and working full-time, it’s great to have reached this point – and graduating with a First Class Honours degree is incredible.”

Adam was given time by his employer, one day a week, to study for the Degree Apprenticeship.

He said: “This was always something I wanted to do and it felt like the time was right now. The Degree helped me with projects I was working on at work, and it helped me to look at things with different angles, helped me to think more strategically and I was able to put project management skills into action to help the company achieve growth while I was studying.

“The support I’ve had both at work and at the University has been brilliant.”

Adam is hoping to look at promotion opportunities within the organisation and in the long term he hopes, one day, to set up his own company in the future.

Graduates are encouraged to keep in touch with the Alumni team and take advantage of a range of benefits and support on offer to them including a discount for Postgraduate study and opportunities to benefit from mentoring, volunteering and career advice.

The Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship, BA (Hons) Business Management, is designed for professional managers who take lead responsibility for people, projects, operations and/or services to deliver long term organisational success.

The three-year part-time course covers all aspects of business, including management, marketing, human resources, finance and operations management. Delivery is by a mixture of face-to-face, distance learning and in-house company mentoring and training support. Learning focuses both on theories and the application of all aspects of management.
