CLASS OF 2022: “I never thought I’d be a nurse and I’m so proud to have made it!”

A Walsall woman has landed a role at Walsall Manor Hospital after graduating from the University of Wolverhampton.  

Ten years ago, Carrie Calvin was told she would never become a nurse, following a severe back injury. 

Determined to achieve her dream, Carrie persevered with physiotherapy and last week, celebrated her graduation after completing the MNurse Integrated Master’s four-year degree. 

Local to the University’s Walsall Campus, Carrie applied to the University after being inspired by lecturers during an Open Day. 

Alongside her studies, Carrie also held the positions of course and school representative, to act as the ‘student voice’ to benefit the learning of nursing students. She has also been involved in several research projects and aims to continue working with the University to support mental health research.  

Earlier this year, Carrie was also shortlisted in the Student Nursing Times Awards 2022 in recognition of her hard work and dedication to nursing. 

The Student Nursing Times Awards 2022 highlights excellence in all specialities of student nursing and brings together the nursing community to shine a light on the brightest talent making their way into the profession. 

Carrie_CalvinCarrie said: “It feels amazing to be graduating. It’s been a long journey, and a bit of a rollercoaster - it hasn’t been easy training to be a nurse through a pandemic, but I’ve made it and have now qualified.  

“My university experience has been excellent, I’ve made friends for life and had so many opportunities along the way.  

“Being shortlisted for a Student Nursing Times Award was an incredible experience. It represented so much more than just an awards ceremony – it was a culmination of two years of hard work and making a positive impact for student nurses, and getting recognised for that was an absolute honour.” 

The 28-year-old begins her new role as an accident and emergency nurse, at Walsall Manor Hospital this week. 

Carrie aims to return to the University to top up her Master’s degree and continue in her professional development.  

The University’s graduation ceremonies take place at the Grand Theatre, Wolverhampton, from Monday 5 September until Saturday 10 September 2022.
