Top achievers in art, diversity and business headline Honours Awards 2022

The University of Wolverhampton is celebrating arts, diversity and business leaders in this year’s Honorary Degree awards – with a Nollywood actress, a local fire chief and a scriptwriter who is highlighting deaf culture through his work on screen all receiving recognition.

The University awards honorary degrees and fellowships to people who have made a significant contribution to their field of expertise. This year, 9 people have been recognised and will graduate in September 2022.

Adesua Etomi-Wellington, a Nigerian Nollywood actor, who graduated with a degree in Drama & Performance in 2009 from the University, has been awarded a Doctor of Arts in recognition of her phenomenal contribution to arts and culture.

She said: “My experience at Wolverhampton was literally life-changing - it is the foundation upon which my career has been built.

“When I enrolled on my course in 2006 I was not confident at all. There is a silent confidence that comes as a result of being informed and being knowledgeable. I was taught to believe in my natural abilities but also put those abilities to good use. I was taught that talent is great but you need to be hard working to achieve.

“This award is very humbling for me and I hope that it inspires prospective and current students to pursue careers in the creative industries.”

Charlie Swinbourne has been awarded a Doctor of Arts in recognition of his creative work on sketch shows and UK soaps including Eastenders and Casualty. Charlie grew up in a deaf family and is partially deaf himself.

Charlie said: “I'm deeply honoured to receive this award. Coming from a deaf family and being part of the deaf community, my work has always been very personal to me, and I'm very proud that it has been recognised in this way by the University.”

Professor Ian Campbell, Interim Vice-Chancellor at the University, said: “The University awards Honorary Degrees to high-profile figures that make a significant contribution to their field of expertise.

“We wanted to celebrate and acknowledge the work of Adesua in the creative arts industry. She is a real champion of the University and of Wolverhampton and will no doubt be an inspiration for our students, graduates and staff.

“This year we are also recognising a range of people from across the arts, diversity and business sectors, in particular marking our continued celebration of providing deaf support and deaf studies at the University for 27 years.  We are looking forward to celebrating with all of our Honorary Graduates at our graduation ceremonies next week.”
