Women in Chemistry explored in series of explosive theatre shows

15/07/2021

The University of Wolverhampton STEM Response Team is showcasing Women in Chemistry in a series of new science theatre shows which are set to open with a bang at the end of July.

The Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) team is putting on a series of shows throughout the summer featuring unsung female heroes who shaped the world of modern science, featuring ground-breaking historical scientists and exploring advanced research being carried out today. The production will follow the lives of The Dark Lady of DNA: Rosalind Franklin, Nobel Prize winner: Irene Joliot-Curie, and the Mother of Modern Chemistry: Marie-Anne Lavoisier.

The “Women in Chemistry” shows will be live, interactive theatre performances which will be available from July to August in selected theatres in Stafford, Telford, Walsall and Wolverhampton. The shows have been funded by the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Heather Angell, (STEM Outreach and Public Engagement Assistant), who plays Marie-Anne Lavoisier in the productions, said: “Women in Chemistry” aims to break stereotypes by encouraging young students, and particularly young women, to become interested in chemistry before and during their GCSE studies.

“By using examples of real-life women we hope to encourage interests whilst raising future aspirations in the field of science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM).

“It’s such a privilege to bring to life one of the iconic women who played such a vital role in early chemistry. We hope to inspire audiences into seeing how interesting chemistry is, and just how important it is in today’s world.”

Ellesse Janda, (STEM Outreach and Public Engagement Intern), who plays Rosalind Franklin, said: “Research from University City London has shown that young women doubt their academic ability to study science and are two and a half times less likely to study science subjects further than GCSE level.

“However, exposing young people to experiences with science greatly increases both their interests and confidence around the subject, whilst enhancing future career aspirations.

“The STEM Response Team are expert public engagers who have influenced over 35,000 young people with their explosive science outreach.  “Women in Chemistry” is a fantastic opportunity to experience one of the team’s award-winning science shows for free.”

Performances will take place from the 23 July until the 24 August in four locations across the West Midlands, including Stafford Gate House Theatre (23 July), The Place Telford (4 August), Walsall Arena and Arts Centre (18 August), and Newhampton Arts Centre, Wolverhampton (24 August).  For more information on locations, times and ticket booking, please visit the STEM Response Team’s official website.
