Does your accent affect the way people think of you?

04/11/2022

Students from the School of Humanities were interviewed yesterday following some new research by the Sutton Trust which found that almost half of UK workers have had their accent mocked, criticised or singled out and people from the Midlands were more likely to worry about it.

BBC Midlands Today attended a lecture on Language and Linguistics at the University's City Campus and spoke to Dr Esther Asprey, Lecturer in English Language and Linguistics, about dialect and the Midlands accent as well as Olivia Fellows, English Language & Literature degree student, and Joe Wood, English and Secondary Education degree student.
