CLASS OF 2022: Youth worker to touch base with an honorary doctorate

A Wolverhampton youth worker has been awarded an honorary degree from the University of Wolverhampton for his contribution to supporting young people in the community.  

Alan Jarvis has been awarded an Honorary Doctor of Social Sciencefor his dedication to supporting the well-being of young people and their families. 

Over 40 years ago, Alan volunteered as warden at Woodlands Camp in Aldridge, which kick-started his passion for youth work.  

Alan went on to study as a youth and community worker at the University of Leeds, graduating in 1996 then progressed to study at the University of Birmingham Information Advice and guidance in 2001, and the University of Wolverhampton Health and Social care in 2010. 

Since then, Alan has worked with people of all ages in many fields, from youth and community sectors to public health and social care in public, third and private sector organisations. 

Now, Alan is the Head of Service at Base 25, a Wolverhampton-based charity which works with around 11,000 young people every year, providing a range of services for them and their families.  

Alan said: “It’s an honour to be awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Wolverhampton.  

“I am particularly proud of my work at Base 25, working alongside an amazing group of people to develop and deliver services that address the identified need of young people and adults. 

After working in the sector for over 40 years, I still consider it a privilege to support young people and I’m truly thankful to be recognised at this prestigious level for my hard work and dedication.” 

Honorary awards are presented by the University of Wolverhampton to people who have made a significant contribution to their field of expertise.  

The University’s graduation ceremonies take place at the Grand Theatre, Wolverhampton, from Monday 5 September until Saturday 10 September 2022.
