CLASS OF 2023: Leader awarded Honorary accolade for global contribution to Sikh studies

Avtar Singh, a prominent leader in the international Sikh community, has been awarded an Honorary Doctor of Social Sciences by the University of Wolverhampton. 

Avtar is an internationally acclaimed figure in the Sikh World. He has numerous qualifications in Religious Studies, Sikh History and Literature from various Sikh Missionary Colleges in India.  

Honorary awards are presented by the University of Wolverhampton to people who have made a significant contribution to their field of expertise. 

Avtar moved to the UK from Punjab, India in 1980 and has held numerous high-profile positions in the international Sikh community including Secretary General of the World Sikh Council (Europe branch) and Member of Religious Advisory Board (SGPC) Amritsar amongst many others. He started teaching Sikh gurbani and philosophy classes in 1981 and has since become a global Sikh TV personality with regular shows about history, theology and Sikh philosophy aired around the world.  

He is currently Chair of the Council of Gurdwara Management Committees UK, based in Wolverhampton, and Chair of advisory board of the Centre for Sikh and Panjabi Studies at the University of Wolverhampton where he has supported the development of excellent relationships between CSPS and the regional Sikh community.  

An engineer by profession, he retired in 2019 as Contracts Manager. 

Avtar said: "Thank you, University of Wolverhampton, for considering me. I am honoured and blessed to receive this recognition of my studies and life's work for the community. This will inspire other people to also work hard for their communities too." 

The University’s graduation ceremonies take place at the Grand Theatre, Wolverhampton, from Thursday 14 September to Friday 22 September 2023.
