Student raising money for Cavell Nurses’ Trust

Learning disability student nurse Amy Green from near Willenhall is taking part in the Cavell Nurses’ Trust’s Valentine’s Day Virtual 5k to raise money for the charity.

Cavell Nurses' Trust supports working and retired nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants when they’re suffering personal or financial hardship. This is often due to illness, disability, older age, domestic abuse and the impact of coronavirus.

On why she’s decided to take on the challenge, second year student Amy, 35, said: “It is something that has personal meaning to me. I thought domestic abuse was purely physical, but when I experienced something similar myself, I saw that it comes in many different forms.

“Covid-19 has affected so many people and I wanted to do something that would help others just as I had help and support. The University of Wolverhampton has been one of my support networks, as well as a registered nurse. Being a student nurse I felt that my passion lies with those in the profession.

“The idea to do the 5k run/walk came about as I am on the nursing ambassador programme and the event was publicised. After reading it, I thought ‘why not’; why not do something, not only to help others in such a challenging time, but also to motivate me too.

“I did the Cancer Research Race for Life 5k many years ago but nothing like this for quite a while. I have been going for walks, healthy eating and reading stories of people who have suffered through Covid-19 to motivate and prepare myself.

“I plan on doing my 5k on Sunday, 14 February and I will share all pictures and videos of my journey for all to see.

“I set a small target to raise for the event and managed to reach that target just five days after setting up my JustGiving page, which I was over the moon about. Anymore raised is just a bonus.

“I am so fortunate to be doing a degree in nursing and even during the pandemic it has been hard and I just wanted to do something positive.”
