Doctorate student appears on Kurdish TV

14/07/2021

Suha Ahmed is a Trainee Counselling Psychologist studying for a Professional Doctorate in Counselling Psychology in the Institute of Human Sciences at the University of  Wolverhampton.

Suha was interviewed recently on Kurdish TV promoting studying in the UK and in Wolverhampton.

I was selected, along with my friend Susan Nadir who is qualified midwife who also studied at the University, to take part in a feature programme intended to inspire women within the Kurdish community in Birmingham to consider a range of work or study options.

For my part, I was asked to share my experiences of how I balance the challenges of being a working mom whilst also completing postgraduate study. I was also provided the opportunity to discuss common mental health issues evident among Kurdish females.

From working as a probationary counselling practitioner within the Kurdish community, I have been able to observe and identify things that help and hinder Kurdish women in achieving their goals - both personal and career.

By sharing my story with other Kurdish women, I hoped to highlight the importance of setting goals, believing in oneself, and recognising that we are capable of achieving our goals despite social and cultural barriers. Another intention was to open up conversations about mental health among my Kurdish community as this still seems to be somewhat of a taboo subject. For instance, my own postgraduate research examines emotional eating among Kurdish females in the UK.

I am hoping to develop a culturally adapted intervention to promote awareness and management of unhelpful emotional eating.
