New podcast launched at University to highlight the exciting world of STEM

01/07/2021

The STEM Response Team (SRT) at the University of Wolverhampton has launched a new podcast to be able to share the fantastic science, technology, engineering and maths related research that’s taking place at the University and the people behind it to a new, non-specialist audience.

The pilot episode, which covers cybersecurity and a potential cancer-treating drug, is presented by the team’s lead, Dr Martin Khechara, also known as Dr K.

The award-winning SRT works in communities to highlight how STEM is for everyone, no matter who they are or where they come from.

Martin said: “During the lockdowns, we shared a lot of content online, especially to support home schooling and because we couldn’t go out and deliver workshops ourselves.

“The response to this was phenomenal as over a million people interacted with our content and it’s been fantastic to start doing physical events again as the current lockdown eases.

“But we know there’s still more we can do to spread the word of how great and exciting STEM is and help people see it as a path they can take.

“We’ve never done a podcast before, so we thought we’d give it a go, and use it to help share the amazing research that’s going on at the University of Wolverhampton and the inspirational people behind it.

“We really hope that everyone enjoys listening to it as much as we have putting this pilot episode together.”

In the pilot episode, Martin talks to Principal Lecturer in Cyber Security Tony Proctor about cybersecurity, including what it is, what's involved, and why it's important. During the interview, Tony highlights the facilities and opportunities at the new Midlands Centre for Cyber Security, a joint venture between the University and Herefordshire Council, part-funded by the Marches Local Enterprise Partnership and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

In the second half of the episode, Martin then speaks to Dr Mauricio Cafiero, Senior Lecturer in Physical Chemistry, about how a drug used for asthma could help treat prostate cancer.
