Law School to welcome Ministry of Justice experts

15/05/2018

Ministry of Justice experts are to visit the University of Wolverhampton to discuss how digital technology can be used to modernise the court system.

The University of Wolverhampton Law School will host members of Her Majesty’s Courts and Tribunal Service (HMCTS) design team on Tuesday, 22 May 2018.

They will meet advisers and representatives from local groups and organisations in relation to the new online Social Security benefit appeal service, which is being piloted in the Midlands. They will also discuss a new prototype online resolution service, which will, in some cases, provide an alternative to oral hearings.

Among those attending the meeting will be students involved in the University’s Law Student Representation Project. This enables law students to gain valuable work experience as volunteers representing local people at tribunal hearings regarding their entitlement to disability benefits.

Head of the University of Wolverhampton Law School, Sukhninder Panesar said: “The Ministry of Justice is introducing a range of design measures aimed at modernising the courts and tribunal system to make it more accessible and efficient. One aspect of the review programme looks at ways in which modern digital technology can be used in accessing justice and in the hearing and disposal of cases.

“As part of this members of the Her Majesty’s Courts and Tribunal Service (HMCTS) design team are visiting the University to establish the user needs of local groups and organisations.

“This is an important and unique opportunity and one which the Law School is happy to be involved in as part of its support for the principle of justice for all.”
