FSE students take on Sleep Easy Challenge

02/03/2017

A‌ team of students from the Faculty of Science and Engineering will be sleeping rough for one night to help raise funds for a charity initiative - National YMCA Sleep Easy Week.

As a result of the teambuilding residential offered to FSE students as part of the University's recent Career Development Week, a team of students got together to take part in this charity drive.

Angela Nash, Senior lecturer of Architecture and Built Environment, FSE, said "This group of 15 students, that range from first years to PhD students from many of the FSE Schools, have taken teambuilding further than we could have imagined.  They have held an end of event party, have a trip to a restaurant where they are taking the hottest curry challenge and are thinking about the plight of those less fortunate than themselves."

Sleep Easy is a YMCA fundraising initiative, raising money to help change the lives of vulnerable young people.  The Team will spend one night sleeping rough to highlight how tough it is for young people facing the prospect of sleeping rough night after night in freezing conditions and in fear of their own safety.

Speaking on their website, the YMCA states that the scheme has been “a staple part of our fundraising since 2010, Sleep Easy has seen more than 6,000 people sleep rough to raise £1m for local YMCA services that help young people rebuild their lives.

Fifteen YMCAs as far afield as Doncaster, Exeter, Cambridgeshire and Coventry are coming together between Friday 3 and Friday 10 March for our National YMCA Sleep Easy Week.’’
