BUILD THE FUTURE – Rosie builds a future in construction with Degree Apprenticeship

11/02/2022

“Having opportunities academically alongside the opportunities I have with my employer practically will give me the step up compared to other universities.”

Rosie Peach-Robinson, 19 from Wolverhampton, is building a future in construction by studying for a Degree Apprenticeship in Building Surveying at the University of Wolverhampton, with the studies being wholly funded by her employer, Kartar Consulting, based in Fort Dunlop, Birmingham.

After completing her A Levels, Rosie didn’t have a set idea about what she wanted to do for a career and began to look out for other opportunities. She didn’t want to go down the traditional university route and started to look at Apprenticeship programmes that might suit her.

She said: “Going to university full-time didn’t feel right for what I wanted to do.  I began to look into roles in construction and wasn’t aware of how many opportunities there were outside of trades.

“In a construction vocation, I think it’s really important to have practical experience as well as theoretical knowledge which is why the Degree Apprenticeship was perfect for me.  I think I’ll have a step up that a lot of people who do full-time degrees might not necessarily have because you learn how quickly the world of construction changes.

“This degree also gives me the opportunity to get chartered at the end of it with RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors).

“Having opportunities academically alongside the opportunities I have with my employer practically will definitely give me the step up compared to other universities.”

Siana Pemberton, a Degree Apprentice graduate and Associate Director at Kartar Consulting, said: “We’ve taken on quite a lot of new Apprentices at Kartar and I was one of the first.

“As a small business, it provides us with opportunities for exposure in terms of the individuals as well as bringing people into the industry at quite an early age and stage in their career.

“I’m certainly a strong advocate for Apprentices and Apprenticeships and it’s definitely a route that a lot of people should look to explore.”
