The University of Wolverhampton has made a significant investment to revamp its gym facilities to provide a more inclusive environment for students, staff, and the community.

WLV Gym is housed over two multi-million-pound complexes at the University’s City and Walsall Campus.

The WLV Gym department has been working closely with Life Fitness to invest in brand-new accessible gym equipment to encourage more active and healthy lifestyles and increase physical activity while aiming to attract new members.

The new-look gym, based on Gorway Drive in Walsall, has been revamped with over 50 brand-new stations including:

  • A ‘Jungle Gym’ which permits complete freedom of motion, increasing users’ strength, power, coordination, and balance as well as allowing four people to train at once
  • State-of-the-art Life Fitness/Hammer Strength equipment
  • Cardiovascular equipment specifically designed for easy access such as a treadmill that declines for easier access as well as a step that helps users gain access from the side

The WLV Gym studio has also been upgraded with more equipment to create a more functional workout space and to enable a wider variety of new classes to be introduced to WLV Gym members.

This weekend, (January 14 and January 15) WLV Gym will be opening its doors at its Walsall Campus for non-members to have the opportunity to use the new facilities for free, and take part in exercise sessions held by university fitness experts.

Jack Higgins, WLV Gym Fitness & Membership Manager said: “We are so pleased to be offering a range of brand-new state-of-the-art gym equipment to our students, staff and community, as we open the doors to our new and improved gym facility.

“As part of our new strategy which focuses on engaging our university community (Students, staff and local community) to be more active, we recognise the importance of making our facilities more accessible and keeping our equipment up to date to make way for a better experience for all our customers.

“The gym has been revamped keeping our customers in mind and we have received some fantastic feedback from many of our loyal members”

“I look forward to welcoming more members back to WLV Gym and hope to see many new faces joining us at our open weekend.”

Kurt_gymKurt Dreslin, long-standing WLV Gym member and University Alumni said: “The refurbishment looks very clean and stylish – it’s well laid out too with more room to manoeuvre than before.

“The new facilities offer a wide range of uses that are more accessible for wheelchair users like myself - the Concept 2 Skier machines in the studio are fantastic if you want an alternative workout to the treadmill.

“There’s also new dumbbells and new benches for free weight users - I’m aching from the new equipment already so I’m certainly feeling the benefit.”

Kurt joined WLV Gym when he was a student studying at the University and has continued his membership since the gym opened in 2004.

WLV Gym memberships start from a competitive £10 per month. To find out more, download the WLV Sport app, speak to a member of staff at one of the University’s Sport Centres or visit: www.wlv.ac.uk/university-life/wlv-gym/

The University has also recently secured nearly £6 million in funding from the Office for Students (OfS) to further invest in exciting advances in sport and healthcare facilities at its Walsall Campus.
