Fully funded Leadership Programme supports West Midlands SMEs

The University of Wolverhampton’s Strategic Leadership and Management Training Programme is helping small and medium-sized enterprises across the West Midlands build leadership capacity through fully funded places for eligible professionals in the healthcare, social care, engineering and manufacturing sectors.
Delivered in partnership with the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA), the five-month course blends in-person workshops, online learning and practical on-the-job tasks. It is designed to equip participants with the tools to lead effectively, drive innovation and strengthen organisational resilience.
The fully funded courses, which were shortlisted for a Research and Enterprise Award, have already exceeded expectations - achieving a 90% completion rate, engaging over 70% of participants from underrepresented communities, and forging connections with more than 40 new local businesses.
Richard Parker, Mayor of the West Midlands said: “Everyone should have the opportunity to progress in their career, so we’re investing in leadership and management training to help the leaders of the future reach their full potential.
“That’s good news for our economy and the wider workforce. Good leaders can inspire their employees and put in place the right conditions for improved wellbeing and productivity – a win-win for everyone.”
Zarah Ahmed, Team Leader – Health and Social Care, Senad Community Ltd, who has recently completed the course said:
“The course has had a profound impact on my role as a Team Leader in the Health and Social Care sector. Since completing the course, I have successfully implemented improved communication and delegation strategies, leading to a more cohesive and motivated team. Staff engagement has increased, stress levels have reduced, and overall patient care has improved. The course has also enhanced my problem-solving and conflict resolution skills, equipping me to handle challenging behaviours, staff conflicts, and compliance issues with professionalism and confidence.”
The next two courses will begin on 26 January 2026 and 9 February 2026 and complete in the summer of 2026.
Applicants should be residents within West Midlands Combined Authority Regions of Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Walsall, Sandwell, Coventry, Solihull and Dudley.
