University of Wolverhampton alumnus Gavin Simpson has been named a Fellow of the Royal Economic Society (RES) - one of the highest accolades in the field of economics. The prestigious honour recognises Gavin’s outstanding contribution to economic education and public engagement, placing him among a distinguished group of professionals shaping how economics is taught and understood.

Gavin graduated with a BA in Economics from the University in 1994 and has since built a career spanning nearly three decades in teaching. His Fellowship is particularly notable as he is one of the first school-level educators to receive the award, which has traditionally been reserved for academics and researchers. This milestone reflects the growing recognition of innovative approaches to teaching and learning in economics.

Beyond the classroom, Gavin is co-creator of the popular podcast Economics In Ten, developed with former colleague Pete Clift. The podcast brings the ideas and lives of influential economists to life in an engaging and accessible format, aiming to improve economic literacy among a wide audience.

“We were really proud that the RES recognised our efforts to make economics more approachable,” Gavin said. “Through Economics In Ten, we’ve tried to shine a light on a diverse range of economists, even though economics as a subject can be very white and Eurocentric in nature. We’re aware of that, and it’s something we’ve always tried to challenge through our content.”

Reflecting on his journey, Gavin credits his time at the University of Wolverhampton as the foundation for his passion and curiosity in economics.

“I’m very proud of my Uni of Wolves days,” he added. “It’s where my love for economics really took hold, thanks to the excellent teaching I received. I see this Fellowship as a reflection of that strong foundation and a reminder that you can go on to make a real impact, whatever your path.”

The University celebrates Gavin’s achievement as a powerful example of where a Wolverhampton degree can lead. His story is an inspiration to students and alumni alike - proof that with creativity, commitment, and a passion for your subject, you not only can enter your chosen field but help shape its future.
