New Curriculum Framework to boost student success, employability and career readiness

The University of Wolverhampton has unveiled its new Curriculum Framework designed to enhance student success, employability, wellbeing, and future career readiness. Rooted in real-world relevance and inclusive learning, the Framework reflects the University’s commitment to delivering a transformative educational experience that prepares students not just for graduation, but for life.
At the heart of the Framework is an enhanced focus on employability. From day one, students benefit from extended induction, structured learning pathways, and embedded professional development. Industry-informed modules, placement opportunities, and hands-on project experience ensure graduates are equipped with the skills employers value most - including digital fluency, critical thinking, and problem-solving.
As part of this future-ready approach, the University will offer Professional Development Work Placements at Level 5 and Level 7. These short-term, structured experiences are designed to provide students with meaningful exposure to professional environments, bridging the gap between academic learning and the world of work.
Key features of Professional Development Work Placements include:
- Short Duration: Work-like experience over a condensed period
- Academic Integration: Always linked to coursework, assessments or professional development modules
- Project-Based Learning: Students work on specific tasks or research with an organisation
- Flexible Format: Can be in-person, remote, hybrid or virtual
- Skill Development: Enhances workplace skills like communication, teamwork, and problem-solving
The placements are a core element of the University’s professional development offer, supporting students to build confidence, apply their learning in real-world contexts, and develop the attributes needed for successful careers.
Professor Gill Knight, Pro-Vice Chancellor, University of Wolverhampton said:
“Our students deserve a well-rounded education that empowers them to thrive in a rapidly changing world. This new Curriculum Framework is a bold step forward - it places career readiness, wellbeing, and personalised support at the centre of the student experience.
“By working closely with employers and professional bodies, we are ensuring our graduates are academically accomplished, confident, capable, and future-ready.”
The rollout of the Curriculum Framework will take place over the next two academic years:
- By September 2026: approximately two-thirds of the University’s taught courses will have migrated to the new Framework, meaning new students joining those programmes will benefit from the enhanced curriculum from day one.
- By September 2027: the remaining courses will transition, ensuring all new students across the University are studying programmes aligned with the Framework.
The Framework also supports staff by promoting cross-disciplinary collaboration, modern teaching methods, and a research-led approach to curriculum design. It provides a structured, future-focused model that aligns with the University’s strategic goals and reinforces its position as a leader in inclusive, career-focused education.
