Wolverhampton students explore innovative wound care techniques

Future healthcare professionals from the University of Wolverhampton recently engaged in a collaborative learning experience focused on cutting-edge wound care techniques.
Students spanning MPharm (Pharmacy), Biomedical Sciences, Podiatry, and Applied Microbiology & Biotechnology disciplines participated in an enriching Interprofessional Education (IPE) event held at the City Campus. The session provided a valuable platform for interdisciplinary learning, centred on the critical role of chemical wound debridement in modern healthcare. Colleagues from the Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE), including Prof. Iza Radecka and Dr Ahlam Ali, also attended the session.
The IPE event was organised and hosted by Dr. Abhishek Gupta, Principal Lecturer (Business Development), School of Pharmacy and Life Sciences and Director and Chief Scientific Officer of iNatural Ltd. Dr Gupta facilitated the session with an international team of specialists from DEBx Medical, representing expertise from both the Netherlands and the UK. These visiting experts led an in-depth exploration of chemical agents in contemporary wound debridement, featuring a live demonstration of innovative techniques.
Key highlights of the session included a comprehensive underpinning of the science and mechanisms behind chemical wound debridement, a practical demonstration of DEBx Medical’s advanced debridement technologies, real-world case studies illustrating clinical efficacy, and an interactive question-and-answer segment with leading industry professionals.
Feedback from students underscored the significant value of the event. Participants recognised its practical relevance, the enriching insights gained through cross-disciplinary interaction, and the direct opportunity to engage with industry experts in wound management. The session successfully bridged the crucial gap between theoretical knowledge acquired in the classroom and the practical application of these techniques in real-world healthcare settings, effectively showcasing the power of interdisciplinary collaboration.
Dr Abhishek Gupta commented, "This event offered students practical, collaborative learning mirroring real-world healthcare. Interprofessional learning is key, and I am delighted to welcome DEBx experts who provided valuable insights into current wound management best practices. I thank Mr. Hans-Pieter Snels, Mr Ollie Wildsmith, Mr Leo Fielding and the DEBx Medical team for their time, expertise, and commitment to educating our future healthcare professionals."
The impact of the session was also evident in student testimonials. Prathima Morbagilu Nagabhushana shared, "The session was brief and informative, introducing new wound treatment technologies and biofilm management. It sparked my interest in exploring plant-based debriding agents, particularly for infected wounds and biofilms, and the 'TIME' management concept was insightful for my upcoming presentation." Elizabeth Agbaje added, "The Creed Health session was impactful and highly informative, providing a comprehensive and interactive overview of advanced wound dressing treatment. The live demonstration of Debrichem was a highlight, clearly illustrating its application and potential benefits in wound management, enhancing my understanding of innovative approaches."
