Throwing Area

Comprising of 6 Roderveld and 2 Radcliffe wheels separated by a large shelving area. Each student is inducted into throwing and turning, within their first year.

This area also includes a Jigger Jolley machine for industrial plate, cup and bowl production, a large slab roller to make rolling out clay that much easier and a wall extruder for extruding hollow tube or coils.

Also housed within the area is two slip casting blungers containing Porcelain and White earthenware slip and a large slip casting table and a collection of plaster moulds for everyone to use.

Mould Making Workshop

There are 2 fully equipped workshops that support plaster work, mould making and model making in the School of Art. These 3D workshops are a practice based environments where students are taught and encouraged to experiment, explore the possibilities of materials and, to learning new skills in 3D prototyping to an industry standard for, Ceramics, Glass, Sculpture and Fine Art. Both workshops supported by portable Panopto for live streaming or demonstration videos.

Kiln Room

Fully equipped kiln room with 12 electric kilns and 2 gas fired kilns. We have a firing capacity from a small pot in one of our 2 test kilns, to a large 4m³ sculpture in one of our 2 large pull out trolley kilns.

Throughout your studies you will work with a variety of clays, with different firing temperatures and glazes firings, from earthenware to stoneware, crystalline and volcanic glazes.

With our gas firings, we can fire a more controlled atmosphere from Reduction, Saggar and organic materials/paper clay bisque firing.

You will learn about oxidation and reduction firings, how to programme your firing cycles for each individual kiln and desired firing temperature. You are shown and encouraged to load and unload your work for each firing.
